In response to an appeal by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP),
Australia pledged AUD 1 million to assist emergency food deliveries for drought-affected people in western Nepal as well as the chronically RURAL food-insecure. AUD 500,000 of this donation will be earmarked for WFP’s new emergency assistance operation in Nepal. Over 225,000 people affected by this winter’s drought will earn a 2-month ration of rice and fortified flour through participation in WFP’s quick impact food-for-work projects. According to Ambassador Graeme Lade, “Australia recognizes the severity of the drought in
western Nepal and is pleased to be able to respond quickly in assisting WFP with funding for its emergency food deliveries. This contribution also reflects Australia’s ongoing commitment to economic assistance in Nepal” The areas most seriously affected by the drought are in the 10 mid- and far-western districts:
Bajura, Jumla, Humla, Mugu, Dolpa, Kalikot, Jajarkot, Dailekh, Rukum and Rolpa. The emergency food security assessment conducted by WFP and the UN Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) in May indicated that production of rain-fed wheat was drastically reduced in 70 VDCs of the 10 affected districts, posing acute food shortages in these areas. All households in the targeted VDCs will receive WFP’s short-term emergency food assistance from late June until the next harvest. An additional AUD 500,000 will be used to address chronic food insecurity prevalent in rural Nepal. In 35 districts across the country, WFP provides food to poor, food insecure populations through its development programmes. Current beneficiaries include 450,000 children receiving food in schools, 17,000 mothers and young children receiving food through nutrition and health programmes, and 30,000 households benefiting from food-for-work programmes that build roads to improve rural access to markets and nearby towns.
