Nepal is high on the list of countries affected by unsafe migration and human trafficking, especially women and the children are the most vulnerable groups for human trafficking and unsafe migration after the earthquake owing to a drastic change in livelihood and poverty. Vulnerability to the trafficking children and women is higher in those worst affected by the disaster than it is elsewhere in the country. Sindhupalchok, Nuwakot and Dhading districts are the most vulnerable as they were the most affected by the earthquake and as a number of other direct and indirect factors exacerbated their vulnerability.
Around 4 percent of the 50 respondents in Sindhupalchok and 2 percent of the 40 respondents in Dhading were responsible for repaying loans and therefore had no option but to work abroad. Around 60 percent and 64 percent from Dhading and Sindhupalchok respectively chose to go overseas to earn money to improve their lives. The study revealed that returnee migrant women workers faced various forms of violence in their workplaces, such as beatings, battering, salary deductions, sexual and physical abuse, mental torture, and inadequate food. The study concludes that poverty and domestic violence are the main reasons women in Dhading and Sindhupalchok seek foreign employment. Because most women are not aware of the government’s rules and regulations, they rely completely on an agent.
