MR. RALPH J. BUNCHE
Abstract:
Portrait of Mr. Ralph J. BUNCHE, Under- Secretary of the United Nations. Born in 1904 in Detroit, Michigan, Mr. Bunche attended the University of California, in Los Angeles, and Harvard University. In 1936 and 1937, he did post- doctorate work in Colonial policy and anthropology at Northwestern University, the London school of Economics, and the University of Cape Town, in South Africa. Mr. Bunche joined the international staff of the United Nations in May of 1946, when he was seconded to the UN by U.S. State Department. However, his first contact with the UN dates back to Dumbarton oaks and the San Francisco conference, which he attended as an advisor to the U.S. delegation. He first served with the UN as director of the Division of Trusteeship. In December 1947, he was named principal director of the Department of Trusteeship and information from Non-Self Governing territories. Mr. Bunche was acting UN mediator in Palestine form September 1948 to august 1949. His present post, which he took over in January 1955, makes him available to carry out ad hoc assignments of inter-departmental character. Mr. Bunche’s activities in Palestine won him the noble peace prize in 1950. He has received numerous other awards and has given honorary degrees from a large number of universities in different countries.
