Disability in Nepal: Taking Stock and Forging a Way Forward
Abstract:
This paper presents a review on relevant literatures and policies related with disability issues and research in Nepal. In addition, the paper also tracks the Progress that has already been made in the area of disability issues, and it also finds gaps that need to be acknowledged and covered in future research so that both appropriate recommendations and a way forward canbe formulated for subsequent disability studies and policy formulations. In recent years there has been a significant transition regarding both advocacy and policy formulations concerning disability related issues in Nepal. More importantly, the changes in national policies and social discourses on disability indicate a shift from considering persons with disabilities as passive recipients of charity and welfare towards making them active agents of self-empowerment and social transformations. Moreover, these changes in policies are the direct reflections and ripples of changing perspectives on disability both at national and international level. However, in reality the impact of these affirmative steps has largely remained invisible and the concept of disability is still deeply embedded within superstitions and stigmas.
