International Scientific Committee Recommendations
Abstract:
On February 17-19, members of the International Scientific Committee (ISC) gathered in Lumbini to review project activities and coordinate various initiatives carried out by the Government of Nepal, development partners, and donors. The meeting was held in the framework of a UNESCO project funded by the Japanese Government, strengthening the conservation and management of Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha and a World Heritage Site.As a result of the meeting, guidelines and monitoring tools for the conservation of archaeological remains will be prepared. Under the project, leaflets with maps, photos and information have been produced to assist site management efforts, and provide visitors with a greater understanding of this ancient cultural area.Recommendation approved by the ISC include a Heritage Impact Assessment to be conducted before every new development project or contractual agreement at sites protected as heritage and archaeological areas in the Greater Lumbini Area. Archaeological and geological investigations must be carried out to enhance site’s protection and development. Sources of air, noise and ground water pollution, should be monitored and controlled. ISC members stressed the need of making sure that existing regulations get enforced by the government. Take off flight paths from Bhairahawa Airport should also avoid key heritage sites, in particular Ramagrama and Lumbini. #UNESCO #INTERNATIONAL_COMMITTEE_RECOMMENDATIONS #2017
