Conserving Wetlands
Abstract:
Nepal’s wetlands house a wealth of plant and animal biodiversity and are an important resource for the livelihoods of surrounding communities. However, many of these wetlands, and particularly those in the heavily populated southern Terai plains, are seriously threatened, with many areas already converted into farmland and the water, plant and animal resources of remaining areas under increasing pressure from human populations. A major reason behind the degrading biodiversity of Nepal’s rivers, lakes, swamps and marshes is that their conservation has received much less attention than the conservation of the land-based biodiversity of the Terai jungles and the Himalayan landscapes.
