Ambassador of Thailand-FAO Officials Visit Sindhupalchowk (May 2015)
Abstract:
Highlights: 1. Soon after the first major earthquake in Nepal, Thailand’s Ambassador to Nepal, H.E. Vutti Vuttisant, and the FAO Representative to Nepal, Dr Somsak Pipoppinyo, travelled to Sindhupalchowk district to be briefed on the damage to agriculture and farming livelihoods. 2. H.E. Vutti Vuttisant and Dr Pipoppinyo were joined by additional FAO staffs from Rome, who were assisting with the emergency response. 3. They met with the Chief District Officer, Local Development Officer, District Agricultural Development Officer and District Livestock Service Officer to hear first-hand how farmers were affected by the earthquakes. Sindhupalchowk, in central Nepal, is one of the worst-affected districts. 4. Many local communities, known as village development committees, had still not been reached due to blocked roads and a lack of communication. 5. According todistrict authorities, 63,885 houseswere severely damaged and around 90,000 people were in need of urgent assistance. These numberswere expected to increase.
