CHAD: Country Office Food Security Update (August 2009)
Abstract:
The principal shocks affecting food security in Chad throughout the month of August were: - the late start of rains and dry spells registered since the start of the 2009/10 agricultural campaign, high food prices and localized floods. Persistent below-average rainfall lead to soil moisture deficits in most of Chad which negatively impacted on crop and pasture conditions. More precipitation is needed to compensate for rainfall and moisture deficits accrued since June to ensure that the vegetative cycles of major food crops are completed. Any early stop of rains in September will be an early warning signal for poor annual food production this year. It should ne noted that the country already recorded a cereal deficit of 10.8% in 2008/2009 agricultural season.Localized floods were reported in Bongor, (240 km south of Ndjamena) following heavy rains registered on 10 August. Over 1,100 households were reportedly affected by the floods. Similar situation was also reported in the suburban areas of Ndjamena following heavy rains registered on 27 and 28 August in the capital city. WFP continue to monitor the flood season and will take appropriate actions when necessary.
