Proceedings of the : National Tripartite Workshop On Employment Policy Review In Nepal ( 27 January 1997)
Abstract:
As a follow-up mechanism to the World Summit on Social Development (Copenhagen, 1995), the United Nations Administrative Committee on Coordination (UN ACC) established a Task Force on Employment and Sustainable Livelihoods under the leadership of the ILO. The Task Force decided that its main activity should be the organization of reviews of employment policy in a few selected countries with a view to (a) developing policies and programmes for employment friendly growth and (b) demonstrating the posssibility of the UN system working together at the country level. The ILO took a lead role in preparing three of the reviews - in Chile, Hungary and Nepal. Within this framework, the ILO-SAAT took responsibility for preparing the country review in Nepal. In carrying out this work, the ILO-SAAT received enthusiastic support from the government of Nepal as well as from Nepalese trade unions and employers' organizations; it also collaborated closely with the Employment and Training Department (ILO, Geneva), the ILO Senior Adviser's Office in Kathmandu, the academic community and research Institutions in Nepal and the country-level offices of other international organizations (including the UNDP, the World Bank and the IMF). The result of this work was a report entitled "Nepal: An Employment Strategy". The report was presented at a National Tripartite Workshop and the proceedings of this Workshop, which record the discussions that took place, are now being published. The report itself is being published separately.
