Zero Hunger Challenge (2015)
Abstract:
Nepal has committed to undertake Zero Hunger Challenge declared by the Rio+20 Conference on Sustainable Development, held in Brazil in 2012 and reemphasized by ESCAP’s 69th Commission Session, held in April 2013. It entails ending hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition by 2025 in a sustainable manner. The Zero Hunger Challenge requires initiatives to implement related activities under the five pillars. These pillars represent a vision where all people would enjoy their fundamental Right to Food to make their livelihoods and food systems resilient with ability to withstand the effects of climate change. The Zero Hunger Initiative will be one of the efforts complementing to international and regional programmes such as Alliance against Hunger and Malnutrition, and the national programmes related to the reduction of hunger poverty and malnutrition. It relates to comprehensive as well as holistic outlook of how to end hunger recognizing the interconnectedness of food systems based on the natural resource use and climate change effects that impact on the level of poverty, hunger and malnutrition. It is 1. A vision; 2. An invitation to action; and 3. A means to unite all working for food and nutrition security and an end to hunger
