Monthly Update – March 2012 UN Resident & Humanitarian Coordinator’s Office Nepal
Abstract:
1. Within the context of implementation of the Seven Point Agreement, the political parties' focus has rested largely on securing a successful negotiations surrounding integration of the Maoist army combatants, transitional justices mechanism and outstanding issues on constitutional drafting. 2. The Supreme Court decision regarding no CA extension beyond 27 May. 3. A major student union’s strike demanding an undivided FWR province had significant impact on Basic Operating Guidelines (BOGs) signatories in Doti District. 4. Local identity politics and the dynamics of the federalism discourse. 5. Undivided Far Western Region’ (FWR) and Tharu activism. 6. Complications in Central Tarai following the abolition of the ‘All Party Mechanisms’ (APMs) 7. Accidental fire has been one of the major disasters during the month of March due to the start of the dry season and fuelled by strong winds throughout the country. 8. An earthquake of 5.2 in Richter scale in the Eastern Region with an epicentre close to the Nepal-India border of Sunsari-Saptari districts. 9. After the outbreak of avian influenza (H5N1) in the Eastern Region, there are reported cases of outbreak in the Central Region including the Kathmandu valley. 10.
