Remarks by Representative of the Secretary-General in Nepal Karin Landgren International Day of Peace
Abstract:
The United Nations is committed to serving and supporting the cause of peace, in the world and very specifically in Nepal. This is the intent of all UN staff serving here in Nepal - in the many agencies that make up the UN Country Team, and in UNMIN - and it is the intent also of the UN Security Council. In each resolution on Nepal’s peace process the Security Council underlines Nepal’s ownership of the implementation of the peace agreements; the strong desire of the Nepalese people for peace and the restoration of democracy; and its own continued readiness to support the peace process in Nepal. Peace processes the world over go through times of great hope and momentum, and other periods when they lie fallow and hope dims. You know better than I do the ups, the downs and the plateaus your peace process has seen since 2005. This time last year the challenges loomed large, and while many longer-term challenges indeed remain, we have seen in just the past ten days several steps taken by the political parties to bring fresh momentum to the peace process.

Abstract:
It’s a pleasure to speak to you on the International Day of Peace, and a privilege to join you in reflecting on Nepal’s own efforts and experiences in turning the end of a ten-year conflict into the transformed country that is foreseen by the peace agreements.
