Micro Enterprise Development Programme (MEDEP IV)
Abstract:
Eighty-three percent of Nepal’s population live in rural areas. The lack of income-earning opportunities in these areas is a major cause of widespread poverty and this has led to the exodus of Nepal’s productive workforce to India and further afield. The Government of Nepal (GoN) and UNDP started implementing MEDEP in 1998 with an objective to promote off- farm employment and, in particular, cater to the needs of socially excluded groups and those living below the poverty line. MEDEP has now been expanded to the fourth phase with an objective to build the capacity of government agencies and private organizations to implement Micro Enterprise Development for Poverty Alleviation (MEDPA) and for the sustainable delivery of micro enterprise development services.
