A Case Study On The Joint Relief Scheme, A life micro-insurence Scheme Promoted By The Madhayamanchal Grameen Bikas Bank In Nepal
Abstract:
The Micro-finance programmes are one of the most significant tools used for poverty alleviation. In the inception phase of micro-finance, practitioners gave emphasis in providing credit to the very poor and those who the banks could not help. This credit mainly focused on productive activities, but it is recognised that the poor have a variety of needs such as social and emergency requirements in case of illness, injury, death, natural disasters, theft, etc. Productive credit alone does not meet these unforeseen needs of the poor. Realising this, some micro-finance institutions (MFI)introduced a savings programme. The savings mobilised, usually provided the basis for a loan for social and emergency needs, but it had limited use. It could not provide full protection from the various risks faced by the rural and urban poor. This realisation led to the introduction of micro-insurance services as an important form of assistance to low-income households to cope with life’s uncertainties and calamities.
