Sexual and Gender-Based Violence: A Serious Concern for UNFPA
Abstract:
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is seriously concerned about the number of sexual and gender-based violence cases reported recently by the media. UNFPA urges the authorities to react quickly and decisively. “Almost everyday we can read about women and girls being manhandled, threatened, raped or/and abducted,” says UNFPA Deputy Representative and Officer-in-Charge Dr. Safieh Anderson. “Last Sunday, young girls were stripped naked and publicly humiliated in Kathmandu and the police failed to intervene in time.” “The police are there to protect people, especially to protect girls and women from violence. They should arrest the perpetrators,” adds Dr. Safieh Anderson. “There must be zero tolerance for sexual and gender-based violence and every citizen witnessing this kind of violence should take appropriate actions to stop it.” This kind of violence is devastating for the women and girls who are targeted and they will be affected for the rest of their lives. Not only do victims of sexual and gender-based violence suffer from physical injuries that could be life threatening but they are also subject to serious medical, social and psychological consequences. Moreover, they often find themselves being stigmatized by their community and rejected by their husbands and family. Sexual and gender-based violence is equally damaging for society as a whole. Worldwide it is now well documented that this kind of violence is frequently considered an attack against the values or "honor" of a society. Rape can be a particularly potent tool employed for a variety of purposes, including intimidation, humiliation and political terror.
