“WFP Appeals For Safe Passage Of Food Aid In Terai”
Abstract:
The United Nations World Food Programme in Nepal is appealing to all parties in the Terai for the free passage of WFP vehicles and trucks identified as transporting WFP food aid in the area. The extensive transport strikes and violence initiated by various groups have severely disrupted WFP’s regular food aid deliveries and ability to operate its programmes, threatening the livelihoods and health status of hundreds of thousands of men, women and children living within the Eastern Terai. “Despite the strikes and political instability during the years of insurgency, WFP was able to transport enough food aid to continue all of our programmes. It is unfortunate that during this historic time of peace in Nepal, our humanitarian operations are being disrupted which prevents us from providing an adequate supply of food aid to needy beneficiaries,” reported WFP Nepal’s Deputy Country Representative, Dominique Hyde. Over the last two months, WFP operations in Nepal have been hampered by weeks of strikes limiting its ability to replenish food stocks at distribution warehouses that support food aid programmes to poor people. Security concerns in Saptari and Siraha districts have forced WFP’s implementation partners to suspend food for work programmes that provide rice rations to thousands of needy people within these districts. The strikes and violence have also limited the ability of WFP field monitors to report on the food security status of thousands of households whose crops have been affected by the drought in the region.
