A Joint Press Release On Avian Influenza In Poultryin The Eastern Region Of Nepal
Abstract:
After receiving the information of avian influenza outbreak in the poultry in west bengal and assam of india bordering the eastern region of nepal during december 2008, the government of nepal hasintensified precautionary measures and declared the bordering districts as “High Risk Zone”. department of livestock Services, Ministry of agriculture, with the technical support from FAO introduced active poultry surveillance in all bordering districts and reinforced the quarantine posts at the four transit points banning the import of poultry products and poultry feeds from India and disinfecting the vehicles entering nepal. taking into consideration, the possibility of occurrence in the eastern part of nepal, ministry of Health and Population with support from WHO, trained the district health staff of eastern region on rapid avian Influenza containment and outbreak investigation in June 2008. As a further intervention, ministry of health and Population and WHO, jointly organized an orientation on Standard Operational Procedures for human cases of surveillance and response and propositioned supplies, drugs and equipments in December 2008. result of the active poultry surveillance, death of backyard poultry was reported in Me chi Municipality ward 10 of Jhapa district. Samples of dead chickens were collected on 10the january 2009 and sent for laboratory investigation. the Government of nepal officially declared the outbreak of in theeastern region of nepal on the 16tho January 2009, upon receipt of laboratory confirmation from the Office International eds epitomizes reference laboratory which also acts as an reference laboratory for the european Commission.
