UNESCO and Japan Support Innovative Efforts To Increase Literacy In Rural Areas
Abstract:
UNESCO yesterday launched a Japanese-funded project to boost literacy through non-formal settings in remote rural areas. The project will provide technical support to empower marginalized population groups through literacy and subsequently contributing to poverty reduction.The project entitled “Literacy for All: Empowerment and Poverty Reduction in Post-Conflict Nepal” will directly benefit around 1000 illiterate girls and women as well as members of other disadvantaged groups through classes that will be moderated by some 50 local literacy facilitators. Their training is also part of the project activities. But the most important project activity consists in developing literacy training methods and reference materials in Dhanusha and Kapilbastu districts, whose adult literacy rates are below the national average of 48%. “The project will provide innovative, mother tongue based modalities to better deliver basic literacy and post-literacy programmes in rural communities” said Axel Plathe, Head of Office and Representative of UNESCO to Nepal at the launch event yesterday. ‘We are grateful to the Government of Japan to accompany the government of Nepal and the development partners in this endeavor”.
