UN Day ceremony in Kathmandu, 23 October 2009
Abstract:
The United Nations is heavily invested in Nepal. Perhaps more so than ever in our almost 60 year presence.UN staff are involved in many spheres of Nepali life, be it as arms or food monitors, as education or constitutional experts, as adviser or implementer. In addition to the 22 UN organizations resident in Nepal, the wider network of specialized UN agencies, are working with discrete parts of the government, less visibly but no less importantly. Experts from the WMO work with the Meteorological Office, while UNTAD staff work with CBS,ITU with the telecommunications’ industry to name a few. Some days, we are criticized for putting too many white cars on the streets, particularly in congested Kathmandu. While we are encouraged by others to expand our presence, our white cars apparently bringing a sense of reassurance that the outside world is engaged. Some days we are criticized by some, for doing too much. And by others, for not doing enough. Khe Garne? Indifference is the highest form of insult and we surely can’t complain of that! Nepal for its part, is similarly heavily invested in United Nations. From peace keeping to LDC leadership, from negotiations over climate change to entrusting the UN with a critical role in the peace process. More on that later, from the head of UNMIN, Karin Landgren. #RobertPiper #RC #Speech #UNDayCeremony
