Statement to the Press : Ian Martin, Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Nepal (30 January 2008)
Abstract:
I condemn in the strongest terms the bomb attack during a political rally held to promote the Constituent Assembly election in Birgunj today, as well as bombings and threats related to other recent rallies. UNMIN and OHCHR-Nepal teams were present conducting monitoring activities at today’s and previous rallies. While full information on today’s incident is still being gathered by police it is clear that a number of people have been injured, including some seriously. I hope that those responsible will be identified and brought to justice. Violence and intimidation have no place in a democratic transition, and in particular in Nepal’s Constituent Assembly election process. Political differences must be resolved through peaceful means. I have no doubt that acts of terror will discredit whatever cause they are claimed to promote with the Nepalese people as well as the international community. #PeaceProcess #Elections #ConstituentAssembly
