International Day Of Peace
Abstract:
This year, the International Day of Peace falls at a critical juncture in Nepal’s own progress towards a lasting peace. The peace process here is admired around the world in seven years since the fighting ended there has been no return to violence.I am greatly encouraged by the way political parties are working together to make this election happen.Manifestos are being prepared.Across the country candidates are being selected and preparations are being made for the open debate and the contest of ideas which an election campaign should be.I call upon all parties to respect the election Code of Conduct and the peaceful democratic rights of others.Once the elections have been held, the burden is on the elected politicians to respect and honor the mandate given to them by the people of Nepal to complete the Constitution without further delay. Some parties have so far decided not to participate. It is not too late, and I would encourage them to join the process, because their views and those of their supporters need to be heard as Nepal charts its future course. It is of course their right to abstain from the election, if they prefer. We will continue to engage with them. The UN discourages any use of violence and intimidation in an attempt to deny others their democratic rights. For some people, an end to the suffering of war will never come. Lost loved ones will never return. But the families of victims deserve justice. Pending cases of grave human rights abuses comm itted by all sides during the conflict should be promptly, thoroughly, independently and impartially investigated. Perpetrators from all sides should be held accountable,in full compliance with both Nepali and international law.Not only will this help heal the wounds,it will also play an important role in establishing the rule of law and making all citizens equal before the law in Nepal.
