OHCHR-Nepal Calls on the UCPN-M and the Government to Respect Human Rights
Abstract:
In view of the nation-wide protests organised by the Unified Communist Party of Nepal Maoist (UCPN-M), OHCHR-Nepal strongly urges the Government, the UCPN-M and the cadres of other political parties to take effective measures to ensure that the human rights of all individuals are protected and respected. The Office calls on the UCPN-M leadership to ensure that their cadres respect the rights of others during their protests, not resort to any form of violence and maintain the highest regard to the rule of law. Emergency services, humanitarian actors and human rights monitors should be ensured free passage at all times. The Office also calls upon the Government to uphold its international obligations and ensure that the security forces act with restraint and respect the rights of freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. #OHCHR #ProtectionOfHumanRights

OHCHR-Nepal calls on the UCPN-M and the Government to respect human rights In view of the nation-wide protests organised by the Unified Communist Party of Nepal- Maoist (UCPN-M), OHCHR-Nepal strongly urges the Government, the UCPN-M and the cadres of other political parties to take effective measures to ensure that the human rights of all individuals are protected and respected. The Office calls on the UCPN-M leadership to ensure that their cadres respect the rights of others during their protests, not resort to any form of violence and maintain the highest regard to the rule of law. Emergency services, humanitarian actors and human rights monitors should be ensured free passage at all times. The Office also calls upon the Government to up hold its international obligations and ensure that the security forces act with restraint and respect the rights of freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. "I urge the Government of Nepal, the Maoist leadership and all other political actors to exercise restraint in response to nationwide agitation. Organisers of the protests should ensure that protestors act peacefully and within the law", said OHCHR-Nepal Deputy Representative Jyoti Sanghera.
