Press Statement: UNMIN Completes Registration and Storage of Nepal Army Weapons (12 April 2007)
Abstract:
The United Nations Mission in Nepal today completed a three-day process of registration and storage of Nepal Army weapons at the Chhauni Barracks in Kathmandu, in accordance with the Agreement on the Monitoring of Management of Arms and Armies (AMMAA). This finalises the first phase of registration of weapons by the Nepal Army and weapons and combatants by the Maoist army. UNMIN registered 2,855 Nepal Army weapons, including, rifles, machine guns, sub- machine guns, pistols and mortars. These are now stored in locked containers, the key being retained by the Nepal Army commander, under 24-hour monitoring by UNMIN arms monitors together with electronic surveillance.
