South Asia Regional Workshop on Contingency Planning for Management of Wheat Rust Diseases
Abstract:
Wheat rust diseases threaten wheat crops in South Asia as well as in other important wheat producing regions. The global wheat rust disease programme of FAO foresees the strengthening of the work on management of wheat rust diseases in South Asia as well as in other regions at risk of wheat rust epidemics. During the `Regional Consultation on Improving Wheat Productivity in Asia ` in Bangkok (26-27 April 2012) importance of wheat rust diseases for South Asia was highlighted and the need for regional collaboration was emphasised. FAO aims to assist countries at risk of the wheat rust epidemics to strengthen national capacities and international collaboration through its Global Wheat Rust Diseases Programme. In this regard emphasis is also given to supporting efforts for management of wheat rust diseases in South Asia including Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal and Pakistan.In the context of preparing national contingency plans and promoting international cooperation FAO is planning a regional workshop in South with titled “South Asia Regional Workshop on Contingency Planning for Management of Wheat Rust Diseases” in Kathmandu – Nepal.
