Integrating the Right to Adequate Food and Good Governance in National Policies, Legislation and Institutions
Abstract:
Against the background of persistently high number of persons suffering from hunger and malnutrition, Nepal has recognized that technical solutions alone do not suffice to tackle the underlying and root causes of hunger and that more attention needs to be given to creating a favorable policy and legislative environment for the implementation of the right to food and the principles of good governance. In this context, institutions and coordination mechanisms have a critical role to play. A proper implementation of the right to food is not possible without interdisciplinary collaboration across sectors, institutions and actors potentially affecting the availability, accessibility, adequacy and utilization of food in Nepal. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), within the context of the Nepal Component of the Global Project GCP/GLO/324/NOR Integrating the Right to Adequate Food and Good Governance in National Policies, Legislation and Institutions will initiate activities in Nepal in view of strengthening the knowledge, understanding and therefore commitment of decision makers, national institutions (in particular the National Human Rights Commission) and coordination mechanisms, and UN agencies in their efforts to promote, protect and monitor human rights in programmes, policies and legislation on food security and the right to food. #RightToFood
