One Year On: the Janaandolan and Nepal’s Peace Process
Abstract:
When I came to Nepal in May 2005 to establish the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) here, there seemed to be no end in sight to a ten-year armed conflict with thousands of civilian victims, and democratic rights were under attack. Even after the historic Twelve-point Understanding that November, most of the diplomatic community were highly sceptical that the political parties could mount a serious challenge to the then government which would open the way to peace, democracy and respect for human rights. Some of us had begun to grasp the significance of the leading role being played by civil society. But no-one predicted the way in which the people of Nepal would express their demand for peace. #HumanRights #PeaceProcess #Government #CivilSociety
