Community-level Wastewater Management
Abstract:
An old settlement of the Newars indigenous to the Kathmandu Valley, Madhyapur Thimi Municipality (MTM) is today a rapidly burgeoning peri-urban centre. Because it was declared a municipality only in 1996, most of its infrastructure, including its sewerage and water supply systems, is still being planned. In 1995, sanitation in MTM was in a deplorable state: more than 50 percent of the population did not have proper sanitary facilities and both the environment and public health were under threat. To improve conditions, part of MTM was laid with sewer pipes. Collected wastewater was to be treated in oxidation ponds, but because funding was lacking, it was discharged into a nearby stream, where it posed a danger to the farmers who used it for irrigation and to consumers of agricultural produce. #SanitaryFacilitiesInMadhyapur Thimi
