Information Sheet: Water Quality
Abstract:
Water being a universal solvent dissolves various substances that it comes into its contact. This includes minerals, chemicals, soil and microorganisms. Hence, it is very rare to find pure natural water with nothing mixed in it. The water we drink also has various substances mixed into it, the exact composition of which depends on the source of water and the way it is handled and stored. Some of the minerals mixed in the water is good for the human body. However, water from certain sources may contain substances at high concentrations that can cause adverse effects on the human body. Generally, three types of substances – physical, chemical and biological – are found in water. #UNHABITAT #UNICEF #USAID #WaterQuality #DrinkingWaterInNepal

Water Quality
Abstract:
it is said that water is life but the fact remains that waterborne diseases such as diarrhea result in the death of more than 1.8 million children below five years each year in the world. This figure implies that one child die due to diarrhea in every 15 seconds Providing safe and reliable water servicies to the 1.1 billion people who currently lack access to improved water sources is an essential long term goal that will yield great health and economic benefit. Less well known is the large potential contribution that households- level water quality interventions can make to immediately improve the health of the most vulnerable.
