Ever since its inception, the UN has relied and worked with partners through informal, formal and consultative relationships. With the turn of the century, member States declared a set of time-bound Millennium Development Goals, launched the United Nations Global as the world largest corporate sustainability initiative, included global partnerships as standing agenda item at the General Assembly and recognized voluntary multi-stakeholder partnerships as important contributors to achieving inter-governmentally agreed development goals at the World Summit on Sustainable Development.
