Highlights:
1. International Literacy Day is celebrated every year on 8 September 2015. This year, a Facebook page has been launched by UNESCO and the Non-formal Education Centre to provide a platform of discussion and sharing among the general public on the crucial issues of literacy.
2. Facebook users can use the #LiteracyforPeace to share any issues on literacy. Users will also learn about interesting literacy facts and stories, and play related quiz games on the page. The page will be in both English and Nepali.
3. A ‘Literacy’ campaign has also started, where public are invited to write down their opinions on what literacy means to them on a piece of paper, take a photograph and share it with the world.
4. In terms of literacy rate, Nepal is still lagging behind the world, with prominent urban-rural and gender disparity. Let’s join hand to promote awareness on literacy rate enhancement in general, and reduction of the existing gaps.
