OHCHR-Nepal Calls on The UCPN-M and The Government To Respect Human Rights

In view of the nation-wide protests organised by the Unified Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (UCPN-M), OHCHR-Nepal strongly urges the Government,the UCPN-M and the cadres of other political parties to take effective measures to ensure that the human rights of all individuals are protected and respected.The Office calls on the UCPN-M leadership to ensure that their cadres respect the rights of others during their protests, not resort to any form of violence and maintain the highest regard to rule of law. Emergency services, humanitarian actors and human rights monitors should be ensured free passage at all times. The Office also calls upon the Government to uphold its international obligations and ensure that the security forces act with restraint and respect the rights of freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.
