Surveys and Demonstration for the Management and Development of the Trisuli Watershed

The Kingdom of Nepal, with an area of almost 555,000 square kilometers and a population estimated at 9.5 million, is composed of three distinct geographical regions: the Himalayas in the north, the transitional zone of forests and fertile valleys, and the tropical Terai alluvial plains in the south. As a result of uncontrolled forest exploitation, soil erosion, landslides and floods are increasingly occurring, causing damage to cultivated areas and irrigation works, disruption of communications, and siltation in reservoirs. To find solutions to these problems, the Government has collected a large amount of data and is applying it in a project designed to bring about the integrated development of the Trisuli watershed, a typical valley of the transitional zone. The project, in which the Government is receiving the assistance of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) as Executing Agency is serving as a demonstration scheme for the most suitable approach to the protection and development of mountain areas and is training national personnel in implementing similar programmes in other areas.
