Timber is one of Nepal's richest resources. Almost 75 percent of the country is forest, yielding wood for construction purposes, pulp, matches and fuel. Wood is one of the major exports to India. The Government of Nepal started its reforestation program following a report the food and agriculture organization (FAO) made in 1953. The report made recommendations for forest and soil conservation, afforestation and reforestation. It also suggested ways to manage existing forest tracts and make the most favourable use of lumber products.
