Portrait of Vasily Stepanovich SAFRONCHUK, undersecretary general for political and Security Council affairs. Prior to this appointment, Mr. Safronchuk was the first Deputy permanent Representative of the USSR to the UN in New York since May 1985. Also from 1971 to 1976, he served as Deputy Permanent Representative of the USSR to the UN in New York. From July 1982 to May 1985, he was head of the Middle East Dept. of the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Prior to that he served in his country’s Embassy in Afghanistan. From 1976 to 1979, he served in the foreign Ministry. He was the Ambassador of USSR to Ghana (1968-1971) Counselor at the Foreign Ministry (1964-1968), and First Secretary and later Counselor in the USSR Embassy in the United Kingdom (1959-1964). From 1955 to 1959, he lectured at the Moscow State Institute for International Relations. A citizen of the USSR, Mr. Safronchuk was born on 16 February 1925. He is a married.
