Mr. Diego CORDOVEZ was appointed Under-Secretary General for Special Political Affairs on 1 August 1981. Mr. Cordovez was born in Quito, Ecuador on 3 November 1935. He was admitted to the bar in 1962. Mr. Cordovez joined the United Nations in 1963 as a member of the team which, under the direction of rural prebisch, organized the first Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). He subsequently served as special assistant to the secretary general and director of the economic and social council secretariat. He was appointed assistant secretary general for economic and social matters in 1978. Throughout his career in the United Nations Mr. Cordovez has been given a number of political affairs officers in a mission dispatched by the Security Council to the Dominican Republic. In 1971, Mr. Cordovez traveled to Pakistan and to Bangladesh on special assignments. He was the senior UN official accompanying the commission of inquiry that went to special representative of the secretary general in connexion with dispute between Malta and Libya over the delimitation of their governments agreed to refer the matter to the international court of justice.
