Nepal is about to enter another crucial week of political discussion and decision-making. I would like to open our interaction by suggesting three areas of action which UNMIN considers are necessary to sustain the peace process. First, maintaining the unity of the Seven-Party Alliance remains fundamental to the success of the peace process. Nepal’s political leaders have shown over the past two years that even when faced with deep differences, they have the capacity to work together to reach consensus for the good of the country. The challenges that currently face Nepal’s political leadership are serious but not insurmountable, and with continued commitment to the peace process these challenges can be worked through by dialogue – among the seven parties, and with other political parties and civil society, including traditionally marginalized groups. Rapid implementation of some decisions already taken could help build confidence back into the process.
