PDF File Size: 86 KB | Download
The UNMIN Mine Action Unit, through its contractor ArmorGroup, has destroyed approximately 90 percent of the total improvised explosive devices (IEDs) held at designated sites near the seven main cantonment sites of the Maoist army. These activities have been undertaken with the full cooperation of the Maoist army commanders in fulfilling their obligations under the Comprehensive Peace Agreement
(CPA) and the Agreement on the Monitoring of Arms and Armies (AMMAA). We have also been working with the Nepal Army to help them fulfil their obligations under the CPA and AMMAA in relation to the destruction of anti-personnel landmines. We have trained a total of 80 Nepal Army personnel in mine clearance techniques, and cleared four anti-personnel minefields. UMIN’s Mine Action Unit is attempting to build a national capacity within Nepal and has sent a number of Nepal Army personnel to the United Nations Mine Action Centre in Lebanon to observe and train in an existing mine action centre. UNMIN is also supporting the Nepal Army, through UNICEF, to undertake mine risk education (MRE) and mitigate against possible minefield incidents in communities immediately surrounding the Nepal Army's 53 (now 48) minefield locations.
