Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world and is among the 50‘least developed countries’ as defined by the General Assembly. In terms of human and social development, Nepal ranks 136 out of 177 countries in the Human Development Index. The country has experienced great political turmoil and is riven by economic and social crises. Half of Nepal’s total population of 26 million are children under 18 years of age. The compounded effects of poverty and social exclusion systematically undermine the rights of many of these children, particularly in rural areas.
