Abstract : Masmaya Gurung, 35, arrives with her three-year-old son Abhinash Gurung, who broke his leg eight days ago while playing football with his brother, at Aarughat Primary Health Care Centre in Gorkha district, the epicentre of the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Nepal on 25 April 2015. The health centre, which was damaged during the earthquake, is being run under tents, including the ones provided by UNICEF. It took Masmaya eight days to gather NPR 250 (approximately US$ 2.5) needed for the one day journey to the health centre from her home in Majhigaun village. At the health centre, Dr. Debesh Shrestha and his team plaster Abhinash’s broken leg. Following the earthquakes that damaged and destroyed more than 1,200 health facilities, UNICEF supported the restoration of basic health services by providing medical tents that were used as health facilities as well as essential medicine and equipment.
