The present report is submitted pursuant to Security Council resolution 1864 (2009), by which the Council, pursuant to the request of the Government of Nepal and the recommendation of the Secretary-General, renewed the mandate of the United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN), as set out in resolution 1740 (2007), until 23 July 2009 and requested an interim report by 30 April. UNMIN was established as a special political mission with a mandate which included the monitoring of the management of arms and armed personnel of the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) (CPN-M) and the Nepal Army. Following the merger of CPN-M with the Communist Party of Nepal — Unity Centre (Masal) on 13 January 2009, the party was renamed the Unified Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (UCPN-M).
