This timely report about Nepal’s changing demography reveals the unique position of the country vis-à-vis its demographic transition. As the population rapidly ages, there will be a higher number of elderly people for each working-age person to support. Nepal’s demographic “window of opportunity,” in other words the time when the
country can reap the demographic dividend before becoming an aged society, is projected to end in around 30 years’ time.
This analysis provides robust evidence and convincing arguments for the urgency of investing in children now to ensure that the children of today as well as future generations are far more productive when they enter the workforce. The Government of Nepal is committed to making these investments, particularly in Early Childhood
Development (ECD), health and nutrition, and in social protection targeted at children under five years of age, namely the Child Grant.
