The two recent earthquakesthatstruck Nepal in April, and May 2015 caused landslides, weakened hilltops and sent hundreds of thousands of poorly built structures, especially in rural areas, to the groundNepal is a hazard-prone nation: the 11th worldwide in terms of earthquake risk, and 4th when it comes to climate change risk. To minimize the impact of these hazards, the Government of Nepal with the support of the international community has been spearheading a wide range of disaster risk reduction and preparedness initiatives over the
past decade.
These efforts have somewhat limited the earthquake’s impacts, but were not enough to sufficiently infuse the building boom of recent years with earthquake-resistant technology, and reach remote rural areas.
