Documenting the process of developing the Nepal Multi-sector Nutrition Plan and identifying its strengths and weaknesses Report of a research project

his research report was commissioned by UNICEF in Nepal, which aims to document the process of development of the Multi-sector Nutrition Plan. The study was undertaken in November through December, 2013, using in-depth qualitative research methods for the national level, and in two selected districts of Achaam and Parsa. Funding for the data collection and report was provided by the European Union (EU), through the Regional Maternal and Young Child Nutrition Security Initiative in South Asia (MYCNSIA) covering five countries in addition to Nepal, and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
Saba Mebrahtu, Chief, Nutrition Section, managed and coordinated the overall study process, in close collaboration with the UNICEF Nutrition Section team, in particular, Pradiumna Dahal and UNICEF zonal offices. It was conducted under the aegis of the National Planning Commission (NPC), involving Mr. Bishnu Nepal, Joint Secretary, Social Development Division, and six key Ministries participating in the Multi-sector Nutrition Plan development and implementation – Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP), Ministry of Education (MoE), Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD), Ministry of Agriculture Development (MoAD), Ministry of Federal Affairs and Local Development (MoFALD), and Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare (MoWCSW). The report was presented during the Nepal Nutrition Group (NNG) meeting, where key national nutrition stakeholdres are represented for comments. It was technically reviewed by Dr. Ramesh Kant Adhikhari, Professor, Department of Paediatrics, Kathmandu Medical College, member of the High Level Nutrition and Food Security Steering Committee of the NPC, and Victor Aguayo, Regional Nutrition Advisor, UNICEF, Regional Office for South Asia (ROSA), and then updated and finalized.
