Nepal has made considerable progress in reducing major micronutrient deficiencies over the past decade and a half; it is one of the few countries in the world that is on track to meet the micronutrients-related goals of the 1990 World Summit for Children, which was re-affirmed in 2002 declaration on the World Fit for Children.
Over 90 per cent coverage of twice-yearly vitamin A supplementation to children 6-59 months has been maintained over the last fifteen years, with de-worming reaching over 8 per cent of children 12-59 months of age since the year 2000. Iron folic acid supplementation with de-worming to pregnant mothers has improved
significantly reaching 50 per cent mothers by 2011. As a result anaemia amongst women and children under-five years of age has dropped to 35 per cent and to 46 per cent in 2011 (NDHS), respectively, from around 75 per cent in 1998 (National Micro-nutrient Survey). Finally, 80 per cent of all households are using adequately iodized salt, which has contributed to the reduction of iodine deficiency disorders in Nepal. These improvements on micronutrients nutrition have most likely contributed to child mortality reduction, which has decreased from 91 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2001 (DHS 2001) to 54/1000 live births by 2011 (NDHS 2011). Nepal is on track to meet the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) Target 4 - related to child mortality reduction, and has received global recognition.
