Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world with an estimated 31% of the population living below the poverty line. The importance of creating employment opportunities for its growing labor force in the context of poverty alleviation need not be overemphasized. Consistent with the Government's high emphasis on Poverty alleviation (10th Plan/PRSP, Three year Interim Plan) and the MDG of reducing the poverty level population by half between 1990 to 2015, the Micro-Enterprise Development Program (MEDEP), with the support of UNDP has been working to improve the livelihood of poor families through entrepreneurship development. Micro-enterprises are increasingly gaining importance in the context of poverty alleviation in Nepal as in other countries. Recently GoN has come up with Micro Enterprise Policy 2064 to facilitate the growth of micro enterprises following the norms and definition of the Policy.
