Nepal has recognized primary education as a basic need of every child in the country and has been making efforts to provide access to school-age children through various programmes and achieve the goal of Education for All (EFA). Despite efforts such as literacy campaigns and free education for children, education is not accessible to all,
due to its indirect cost.
This book gives an account of the Nepalese Government’s efforts to develop a non-formal education (NFE) system operating in parallel to the formal system, in order to meet the needs of all children and young people who either have no access to school or who have
dropped out early. It draws a comparison between the main characteristics of the non-formal education centres thus created and those of traditional schools, while paying special attention to the educational links between the two systems.
