This is the statement by Robert Piper,UN Resident and Human Co-ordinator in Nepal. In the opening of national seminar on translating commitments, accountability and partnership into action. At his statement he thanked all the program organizers of the seminar. The seminar was the fourth Least Developed Countries conference. It was an important t landmark for all the 48 LDC countries in the world. It was an opportunity for them to collectively raise their concerns and be heard by their development partners. And it was an opportunity for all parties to reiterate their “commitment to a collective and shared responsibility to uphold the principles of human dignity, equality and equity at all levels” as the final declaration read.It was equally important for Nepal, if not more so, since Nepal is the Chair of the LDC group and as such had a large share in the success of the Conference.
The Conference reviewed progress on the Brussels Programme of Action which was adopted 10 years ago at the 3rd United Nations conference on the Least Developed Countries in Brussels and found that although positive progress had been recorded in many areas, the programme had not been fully achieved and there was a need for a renewed and strengthened partnership for development in Least Developed Countries.
