Early pregnancy and childbirth are important issues in many countries. Early childbirth is associated with higher health risks for the mother and the child as well as higher fertility. It may lead girls to drop out of school. In most countries, most early childbirths take place after marriage. But in some countries, it may also often take place without a marriage or union.
To reduce the prevalence of early childbirth, specific programs and policies are required, for which basic information is needed. Using techniques inspired by the poverty literature, this brief provides a basic profile of early childbirth in Nepal.
