Despite various development efforts made to address the root causes, poverty is still a multidimensional problem in rural areas where mainstay of the economy is agriculture. Natural resource-based micro-enterprises are emphasized as a measure for accelerating rural economy. This study was conducted to analyse the contribution of natural resource-based micro-enterprises to rural livelihoods in three settlements (Patella, Khonpur, Baispur) of Kailali district. The major types of micro-enterprises found in the study area were vegetable farming, animal raising, and retail business. Though the findings were based on limited information from a small Tharu community in the vicinity of a town, the results show that micro-enterprises not only create employment opportunity and income, but also contribute to preserve traditional arts, indigenous knowledge and skill of the community. As micro-enterprises basically start with the indigenous technology, knowledge and skill, there is a need to update them to meet the changing needs of the people overtime. Hence, there should be a regular training program to update the entrepreneurs' knowledge and skill to render them competitive.
