The livestock sector is an important component of the Nepalese economy in terms
of income, employment and equity. Livestock-based micro-enterprise is of high
importance in rural economy that provides food, employment and income generating opportunities. This study has analysed the effectiveness of livestock based micro-enterprises on poverty reduction. This study was carried out in Hansposa VDC in Sunsari district. The study covered 47 respondents from four pockets. The study has concluded that livestock raising is an important element for poverty reduction as it produces foods, generates income and creates employment. However, livestock rearing is still of subsistence in nature mainly due to lack of systematic cultivation of fodder and forages, animal diseases due to lack of vaccination, low quality breeds and high price of livestock feeds. In order to promote livestock-based micro-enterprises, this study has recommended motivating the farmers to take up livestock as a commercial enterprise by enhancing their entrepreneurial skill. They should be linked with veterinary service providers and credit facilities.
